As a child I was a fussy eater.
When I say fussy – that’s somewhat of an understatement.
As a ‘pub-kid’ my staples were Coke, Crisps and ‘scampi and chips in a basket’.
I kind of wandered around, helping myself to things – and was largely left to my own devices as children did much more of in the 80s.
The upshot of that – was an excellent pop music knowledge (a man came with the Top 10 for the jukebox every week), mad skills at pool, darts and dirty jokes – but ate literally no vegetables.
None at all.
Would dramatically gag, in fact.
Fast forward to all-grown-up me; Vegan, Gym-Going, Veggieholic – I suppose I could have gone one of two ways, really.
Phew.
My other pub-kid chums largely didn’t share the same fate; a high proportion of drinking/smoking/eating to excess with weight and health issues that could be attributed to those early years.
Much of what we do, is.
These internalised ways of doing things get ingrained in us both early on, then at significant points through our lives.
Trends become habits and just the way we do things.
While the details can change – the impulses can have a trend when we take a microscope to them.
‘Needing’ treats to lift your mood.
Responding to stress with excess (or not enough).
Worrying ourselves to a sleepless standstill.
Self-sabotage feeling safer than succeeding.
Needing reassurance but then pushing it away when it comes.
Falling off all the wagons and then beating yourself up.
Like running at a locked door and blaming ourselves that it didn’t open.
Our lives have shaped our responses and until we tackle the fundamentals, it’s not that we are doomed to fail – but it makes progress bloody hard and a constant struggle.
One ‘pub kid’ Maria – now a grown woman, came to see us about what she described as ‘lack of consistency’.
She starts well, makes progress but once she hits a snag – it’s always back to square one.
When we delved a bit further – the issue was really more about ‘all or nothing’ thinking.
Daughter of a passionate Italian mother – everything was drama, the end of the World, the WORST day ever, the BEST meal of her life – life and soul of the party – and she fed everyone until they could barely function.
And this had its effect.
Yo-yo dieting, sporadic exercise, sleeplessness and stress all resulted in a body that felt tired, overweight and out of shape.
Like snakes and ladders – every hurdle plummeted her back to the start with a more deeply entrenched feeling of guilt, and low confidence in her ability to set or reach any goals at all.
We used hypnosis to get to the heart of the problem, rewrite the ‘doomed to fail’ sub-programmes she’d learned and perfected and send her away focused, enthused and ready to tackle the World.
Calming the emotion down to a logical place, so that steady chain of progress could be built – with wiggle room mentally built-in, meant that Maria could finally give herself a break and move forward.
The effect was dramatic.
Not only did she achieve body goals she set out to in far less time than she thought possible, but for the first time she could remember she said ‘I feel genuinely happy and at peace with who I am in the World’.
When you begin working with people in hypnosis – you feel wildly excited by the instant transformations in people.
But while I’ve never got used to it (it’s still massively gratifying) – It was still one of my favourite ever sentences to hear.
This wasn’t just about showing off her ‘impressive new arms’ and flat stomach but something much more fundamental and important.
She FELT different – with a knowing that ‘if she could do this – she could pretty much do anything’.
Like a switch had been turned on and she’d shifted into a new gear.
A feeling of strength and knowing – that she’s never had before.
She’s awesome.
This is the power of hypnosis.
It’s not actual magic – but it’s the fastest intervention we know that makes the biggest difference.
Updating the operating system rather than just buying another bit of software.
Take it from a former Coca Cola-fuelled, Scampi and chips scoffing, pool playing Pub Kid.
