I’ve picked up my blog/email pen
a few times lately…
I don’t tend to write about the latest sports bra or spiralizer
(did I tell you I sprialized my thumb? Use the finger guard kids – highly embarassing)
I prefer to write about what’s going on in the World, in the papers etc and how I’ve noticed something about it
or a way of looking at things
or a cunning hack
that might help YOU in some way or another.
(or at least make you laugh)
I started writing and I gave up each time, for weeks.
The World has not been a very inspiring place.
And tempting though it is to give you my ranting and views on terrorism, Brexit, inequality – all crafted into something very passionate and clever sounding…
There’s plenty of that out there to read – and I expect you’re probably at saturation point anyway.
(and let’s be honest – those sorts of posts are more about the ego of the writer than the reader)
So we wanted to suggest something that might actually help instead.
After the whole Brexit vote fiasco, some of the things I was reading on Facebook really shocked me.
Without ‘going there’ (which adds fuel I think to an already aggressive wildfire)
I realised that I was reading a whole host of views in my FB news-feed that were diametrically opposed to mine and often expressed in a really nasty way.
And I also realised that actually a great number of the people I was giving brain time (however briefly) to each day…I:
a) literally would not know if I passed them on the street holding a misspelled racist or homophobic placard, and
b) were people I am not overly interested in the opinions of, anyway.
Why on earth was I wasting time scrolling past their stuff?
Only immortal people or Dr Who have time for that.
But more importantly, as we spoke about in a recent interview on Body Confidence with Zoe McNulty (you MUST watch that when it comes out – it’s part of an extremely cool training)
Why let that stuff into your head?
Life is tough enough – when idly browsing.. why not make sure you’re seeing stuff that uplifts you, inspires you, helps you, makes you feel great?
Have a friend list made up of just the people in your life that love you and have your back…
So I found a piece of code that literally deleted EVERYONE in one go.
(I could kind of ‘save’ some of them as they went past) but in the end I let it do its thing – and just requested people back to my tiny little friend list of about 15 in the end after the thing had stopped doing its thing.
And over the following couple of weeks.. other people popped up and said “coo-eee” did you mean to remove me?
I explained and then we were FB budskis again.
(If that’s you…feel free to request, no offence meant!)
Shall I tell you what?
It has been GLORIOUS.
Zoe described her newsfeed as being full of cute rabbits and happy stories, mine is now full of comedy, kittens falling off things, and uplifting stuff.
…and really really nice people!
If you don’t have such a ridiculously large friend list, it is perfectly possible to just go through and do it yourself.
The criteria could be: if I saw them in the street, would I stop to chat?
I thoroughly recommend it. It has been a game changer.
Why not have a think about whether this would be good for you.
Have a great day.
