the vibe of them
the fact that the people behind the till are usually nice and nerdy and totally up for a chat.
Did you know that real, ‘hold in your hand’ books – still outsell online books and audiobooks?
Looking at my bookshelf the other day, I was reminded of a probably irritating little fact about myself – I HATE finishing books.
There were five (probably more) books that I hadn’t finished.
It wasn’t a case of losing interest or not finding the time – I tend to actively choose to opt-out before the finale.
It made me smirk to see the little dog-ear folds a few pages from the end.
A decent psychiatrist would have a field day.
Thing is, I don’t know about you – but I get completely immersed in the ‘world’ of it – I don’t want it to finish.
The end of those people and places I just got intimate with.
Like Schrodinger’s cat – it’s like the story is still being played out somewhere in the Universe, and it could still end more than one way – like it is in my head.
I’ve started doing it with Box Sets too.
(We’ve all got our weirdnesses – or cute quirks as my daughter calls them
Stories – done well – give us genuine emotions – even physical reactions.
Sadness, happiness, laughter, worry, suspense, terror, passion, awe.
I remember one of my children (who will remain nameless in case they read this) absolutely inconsolable for hours after Dobby died in Harry Potter.
Literal bawling – which was super cute, adorable, and a little bit funny.
I kept a straight face and I think a chocolate Hob-Nob was involved
And all of that emotion is happening in our heads.
In fact, so much of what we would say was the ‘story of our lives’ isn’t particularly accurate.
When we remember things, our brain naturally edits a bit,
then when we come to remember again, we are remembering the memory.
Like Chinese whispers – it gets a bit distorted.
And we act accordingly.
Thinking about the future is even wilder.
We can literally create whole scenarios and have entire arguments/worst-case scenarios/panic attacks/sleepless nights about things that haven’t happened yet.
And it’s all in our heads.
It’s massively liberating when you get hold of that concept.
What happens in our heads doesn’t need to be true to affect us deeply.
You already are the author and scriptwriter of your life.
In fact, you are the author, scriptwriter, chief editor, PR agent and publisher.
And decent books don’t come about by randomly scribbling notes on the hoof.
They need a blueprint, a structure so that the creative, fun stuff can happen (or else it’s just a rambling stream of consciousness like a Trump Press Briefing…)
Some clever person or other said: “There’s no manual for the perfect life.
Well… ahermm – we’ve kind of written one.
Actually, we’ve created the structure for you to write yours, and we are going to help you do it.
