Week 1: Task 1
Create 3 lists:
List 1: Things I am good at
List 2: Things I love to do
List 3: Things people could pay me for (even if you are not sure of the mechanics yet.
Try to make it as exhaustive as possible and not worry too much about what seems silly/unachievable at the moment.
The things can be really specific: e.g. building garden furniture
or less specific: helping people solve personal issues/working with people
Task 2
Now go through your lists and find what appears in more than one column.
Highlight in particular the ones that already appear in all three columns.
Task 3
Create a personal training schedule - and let me have it.
As I said, I'm quite happy to help with this - but you were happy to create this.
Let me know WHAT you are going to do
HOW LONG each session is going to be
WHEN you are going to do it.
HOW you are going to remember.
and then a way to TELL me that you did it!
I like google calendar and phone alarms/alexa, but let's think about a way that works for you.
Let me know if you want any workouts of any kind and I can add them here. I have everything, probably!
You weren’t mad keen on Zoom, so I am thinking Voxer (below) could be a good one too.
I know your iCloud wasn’t working, so that’s probably a priority in general to get your phone/email functional again.
You can get in touch with me by phone/Whatsapp (if it gets fixed) 07927303491

Greg’s stuff…

3) Speaking to people face to face
4) problem solving
THINGS I LIKE DOING
1) Cycling (hobby/fitness)

THINGS PEOPLE COULD PAY ME FOR
1) Something wood-related

3) Something creative
Other achievements this week
Thoughts on this:
So starting with the THINGS YOU LIKE DOING
(otherwise what's the point of doing it)
1) Being creative
2) Using my hands
3) Speaking to people face to face
4) problem solving - all of them
Coincide well with THINGS YOU ARE GOOD AT
2) Making things
4) Being creative
And things you could get paid for
1) Something wood-related
3) Something creative
So the obvious thing that ties all of these things together offering a carpentery/joining service.
There are no formal qualifications needed to become a joiner.
Before becoming a self-employed joiner and starting your own business, though, people often opt for some on-the-job experience.
Many employers offer intermediate and advanced apprenticeships that let you work towards a level 2 or 3 diploma in carpentry and joinery.
If you intend to work for yourself, studying practical joinery course at college could well be enough to get you started.
I asked in one my groups and it does seem that bespoke work for the would be popular.
Also people often opt for perennial slightly more boring things like fitting doors/skirting/decking is always popular.
So it could be that that kind of work could be the 'bread and butter stuff' while you develop a specialism of things you really like to make.
I asked a construction company friend about this - here's what he said
" There's a lot of call for carpenters and joiners and general wood butchers... Bespoke and upcyling is very popular. Lots of courses online and at college he could look into if he wanted to re-train and there may even be grants available for him too. "
Exercise
2 sessions on the turbo trainer, (1x60min 1x20min).
Some shorter weight sessions
Press-ups waiting for the kettle to boil.
I have also been going through my dad's old tools cleaning them off and sharpening chisels etc.
Started to also use my phone for reminders,
to try and be a bit more organised.
My thoughts on this - great start, but in the spirit of getting organised and making progress a weekly schedule that you work to, would make sense.
If you want us to create a programme in our app to remind you what to do - we can do that.
If you do - apart from the turbo trainer - can you let me know what kinds of equipment you have (or even take a pic)
It would be great to include something 6 days a week, interspersing big days with some of our stretch videos (or indeed with Laura who would be kickass at this too)
Here's one with Amy you might like
20/11/20
Today we talked about
- about the issues of organisation and some possible ideas that might work for you.
Overwhelm Exercise
The first one was around ’emergency’ organisation, when there are so many tasks, they feel too overwhelming to begin
(or you just end up having a cup of tea!)
- Braindump ALL the things on your mind (you don’t have to show me, but are welcome to if it seems useful)
- Divide those into things you CAN control, and things that your CAN’T directly control/affect.
- Cross out all the things you can’t control/affect.
- Of the things left, work out which things you MUST do – and that must be you that does it (like life-critical, health, or extremely important tasks) and circle them.
- Put those things on post-it notes (and if you want, how long each thing will take to do/do something about)
- Arrange them in order on a wall/table, from MOST important – to least important.
- Tackle things from the MOST important, and then the next… then you know what you are doing next is the best thing to do, rather than just low-hanging easy stuff.
I have made a little course on this – takes about 25 mins to watch if you are interested.
(workbook below)
Thats a great place to start when things get hectic,
but long term – we talked about you dividing your to-do list like this.
It’s the Eisenhower Matrix you see at the end of the last video.
If you get a chance to watch the videos it’s a great place to start.
If this works for you, it would be great to see your completed Eisenhower Matrix.
3rd December (Amy)
Amy worked with you to find out some more information and to troubleshoot your knee pain.
As some cartilage in your knee had been removed, leaving your knee somewhat unstable, and causing pain.
The unstable knee also caused some referred problems with stiffness in your ankle.
I understand you have a ball you can use for this. If you want to get one like Amy’s, it’s a Lacrosse ball and you can get one from Decathlon.
Do the exercises on both legs
The 4 exercises Amy would like you to do:?
- Rolling the ball on the floor along the arch of your foot, and then from the inside to the outside. Do this daily as often as you like.
- Roll the ball on the arch on the inside of your foot like a zig-zag all the way to the outside edge and back for a minute. Do this daily as often as you like
- Lying on your front on the floor. Put the ball under your hip flexor (if you had jeans on, that would be where your hand goes in your pocket) Do this before a bike ride or if you have been sitting down for a long time. Don’t do this every day or you’ll make it bruised.
- Hamstring Stretch. Using a resistance band. Lay on the floor on your back and loop the band over your foot with your leg in the air, as straight as you can make it (preferably locked at the knee). Use the band to pull your foot towards your head as you simultaneously push against the band. Do this daily as often as you like
Amy would like to see you again on the 17th December to see how you are getting on with the exercises.
10th Dec
Last time we spoke we talked about how to start making your ongoing Eisenhower Matrix and how useful you felt it having it very visual.
Also here are the recordings you said could be useful
So the work was to create your FULL list of things to do – long term, short term, all the stuff in your head.
You said it might be useful to do that with Laura.
Once that’s done – it’s a case of getting those things into the Eisenhower format either on paper – or with https://www.eisenhower.me/ either the phone app or the web app.
You’d made some progress with the idea of making a piece (Oar) as a practice, and also investigated some potential industry experience in the Estate Agency sector – in the meantime.
Another thought we didn’t get time to talk about is the idea of you creating, upcycling wooden items for YouTube… with Laura!
I think you would be amazing together – and Laura could ask you about what you’re doing as you do it. Reckon it would be fun!
There is a real appetite for this kind of video, and if working with wood stays on the backburner for now or even stay as a hobby if that’s what you decide, it could be a great way to spend time together.
