There’s been really good research happening for a few years about Oxytocin.
“The cuddle hormone”
“The fidelity booster”
In a nutshell, this is the hormone a mother produces, to make her milk supply work AND to help with bonding with her baby.
They have also found that the more cuddling all of us get – the more of this stuff we produce.
Also, they found that the more that men in relationships were exposed to it… the FURTHER they stood from hot-looking women in social situations…that weren’t their wives.
It also made them generally more romantic and faithful.
All kinds of really fascinating stuff.
AND artificial versions of the stuff has been sold for years, and used with various ethical… and possibly not-so-ethical intentions…
Also we would seriously doubt that there are any active components in it – and at £25 a bottle – probably very expensive tapwater 😉
But today we just want to tell you about something rather cool.
Some Swedish (got to love the Swedish) researchers, ran an experiment where people suffering from anxiety had to deliberately perform an act of kindness on each of 7 days.
They took base line readings to measure exactly where each person was on the ‘anxiety scale’ before they began.
A week was spent carrying out their planned ‘kindnesses’ to friends, family and even strangers and took hormone levels throughout – and a full analysis at the end.
What was amazing is that found that the acts of kindness naturally produced surges of Oxytocin AND the Happy/Mood Stabilising hormone Seratonin – in the person BEING KIND.
But the amazing result was what happened at the end of the week..
Anxiety levels and in one case, even in one case, symptoms of PTSD, PLUMMETED.
That’s got to be the ultimate Win:Win, right?
Do something kind, make someone feel good, lower your anxiety levels, lift your mood.
Our grans said “It’s nice to be nice” – but it turns out it’s great for our mental health too.
