Alright, Sweetie?
We have been trying to seduce you into little changes
that will add up, over not too much time at all
into a MASSIVE difference
So YOU feel amazing.
Things that keep you satisfied, and not snacking
and get you back in touch with your body.
And while we’ve said to bin-off sugar, ideally – there are other options if you are going to have it.
SUGAR … but slightly better.
So rather than use this list to keep on with the same sweet
fix/comfort food habits
(and substitute refined sugar for one of these)
We’d love you to start thinking about your diet as a whole
and making lots of simple better choices.
‘Crowding out’ the bad stuff, with so much good stuff
(and seeing how much better you feel)
that naturally you’ll want more and more.
But in the meantime…
To avoid the sweet cold-turkey.
Here’s some ways to make a start.
We have recommended our favourite choices and given
you Amazon links (to save you traipsing round the
specialist stores)…
Should something tickle your fancy!
Below are our ULTIMATE Top 5 alternatives to refined sugar…
There are tons more – but these are the ones we have tried, tested
and like. I find Amazon the most competitive so have a click about
and find the best deal for you.
You can click each of the pictures for more info on the products.
1. Raw Honey
- Contains nutrients
- Considered a Super-food by nutritionists
- Rich in antioxidants, helpful enzymes and minerals
- Can even be used on the skin for cuts and abrasions.
Considered a super-food by wholefood practitioners,
this is a million miles
from the standard supermarket processed variety.
It looks a bit funny.
You often get bits of honeycomb in it – it is most certainly more cloudy.
I found a couple of bee wings in mine before!
Which I thought was quite cute – but not to everyone’s taste.
You have to be careful, there seems no standardisation of what can be
called ‘raw’.
If you have a bee farm near you – you can talk to the farmers themselves
to find out exactly what has gone on in the production.
Also – it is relatively high GI – so you need to use very sparingly.
I have included it in this list as a BETTER option to refined sugar,
as it isn’t just empty calories
but really doesn’t address the whole sugar/slump cycle.
2. Coconut Palm Sugar
- Lower GI (so less of a sugar crash)
- You can use it JUST as you would sugar
- Tastes like a yummier brown sugar
- Makes my coffee taste like a posh Starbucks one
- Benefits Farmers (economical to grow and enriches the soil)
I rather love this.
However calorie-wise
it is really about the same as those in sugar.
Again – a better option….not a miracle cure!
3. Stevia
- No Calories, and No G.I. impact
- Madly popular…been used for centuries
- Suitable for diabetics
- 300 times sweeter than sugar
Most people get on well with this.
For me…has produced some rather unladylike “excuse me vicar” effects…
There have also been reports of headaches and numbness but with no long-lasting effects.
The after-taste isn’t to everyone’s palate – but many people swear by it.
You can theoretically grow this at home, but apparently not an easy project.
4. Lucuma Powder
- Does not significantly impact blood sugar
- GOOD source of carbohydrates
- Great source of beta-carotene; boosting the immune system
- Rich in iron and B1, B2 (brilliant for women)
- It smells nice. Low in calories.
Lucuma powder is a good option for diabetics and breastfeeding mums.
5. Molasses
- When sugar is refined…the nutrition is left in the molasses.
- (OK that’s not EXACTLY it, but pretty much the way to think about it)
- It is very sweet and has a strong flavour.
- Brilliant for baking – especially Christmassy baking
- I find it a little full-on for some other things
- A little goes a LONG way..so you use less.
- The GI load is about half that of sugar
Good for what it’s good for!
It is DEAR. I won’t lie.
In summary:
All of the above are BETTER options than refined sugar
But the best thing is to try to minimise the sugary/sweet foods
in your diet.
And as ever – do your research!
Opinion and science changes all the time,
Google is a GREAT reference for all kinds of info.
Don’t just take our word for it..
