I started this post…
about one thing.
Then it became about something else.
This happens a lot.
I was going to say something that I thought was true.
“Instructors are not judging you.
They are just delighted you came along.
They will be really nice to you.”
Turns out that is isn’t always the case…
Tell you about that in a bit.
Here are some things that people
say to me….LIKE EVERY DAY!!!!
Everyone will laugh at me.
I’ll be the one at the back
looking like a gormless idiot.
I will probably actually die.
I am sh*&ting bricks –
a room full of fitties is my idea of hell.
I’ve got no energy at the end of the day.
I don’t have anyone to come with.
I haven’t done anything since P.E
(and I hated P.E.).
I have nearly come along for months now
…I will try to soon.
I am not a morning person,
I know I won’t get up.
I can’t afford it at the moment.
I have got too many meals/parties/
holidays coming up – there’s no point.
I’ll start when the kids go back to school.
And they all seem absolutely true
to the people that say them.
The thing is….
I have seen over and over,
People who feel this way,
and then for whatever reason
they have a FECK it moment.
They do it
And find out that they were wrong.
I used to argue and give all the reasons
I knew this thinking…wasn’t accurate.
Now I leave it to other people
to tell them.
So I will let them tell you,
but I will say this:
Fitness classes are full of normal people.
Some are big
Some are unfit
There’s always 2 or 3 people
who haven’t been before.
Most people want to go at the back.
Most people wear big baggy tee shirts
No-one gives a flying feck about
how good, bad, or uncoordinated you are.
They are too busy with their own sh&t.
In fact…no-one notices.
People ARE really nice to each other.
(You are having a shared time together
and you already have that in common
pumped full of happy hormones
and gyrating your titties like a video ho
What’s not to love?)
I was going to say: instructors don’t judge you.
They are just bloody grateful that you turned up.
But having read what was written below…
I will change that a bit.
I will say that MOST are blimmin’ brilliant
and will do their best for you.
And look after you
So I will only speak for us
at Wise & Gorgeous..
The bits WE care about the most, are
Not how good the classes are
or whether we are running the latest
Insanity, FitSteps or whatever
the current fad is.
Or actually how much weight you lose.
Not our priority.
We care about things like:
- a friendly welcome
- making you laugh until a little bit of wee comes out.
- knowing your name and what’s going on with you
- that the music is so good you ask us for the playlist
- that the lights are sexy and low so you don’t feel embarrassed
- that it isn’t boring or a chore
- that everyone feels equally welcome
- that we are consistent …and classes will always be on
That’s our ruthless and cunning business trick.
Wanting you to love it and keep coming back.
If you keep coming back, you’ll get in great shape.
If we almost kill you the first week, you won’t keep it up.
If it’s boring and repetitive…
you’ll stay in and watch Doctor Who.
Bloody love Doctor Who.
We decided early on, that we would only run classes
that WE would want to go to.
Dammit, I shouldn’t say this because she’ll tell me off
but I would teach our Wednesday night for FREE.
(Unfortunately there is hall hire to pay
and the gas bill and that)
I asked about this on FB today:
This is what some people said…
Hannah Poole I went to ******* *** yrs ago,
was dubious anyway, dragged along, I
stood at the back, spent most of the time
dying of embarrassment and going for drinks breaks!
Very intimidating class! Never went back!
Refused to ever partake in any dance based exercise,
now look at me!!!! You must be doing something right! x
Gemma Cooper When I came to ur class last week
I was Sh$€ing it!! I felt very self conscious
and when I first got there felt awful as I didn’t know
anyone and felt apprehensive and not knowing what to do etc
was proud of myself for doing it – and soo glad I did.
Once the class started I just got on with it and by the end
was chatting to a couple of people!
The class is good for me as we learn each bit slowly
and the music is fab!!
Plus great help/advice from u and Claire was another thing
that made me come back – and bring a friend!!Sam Ward I was nervous but excited to go to your’s & Claire‘s
weds night class. Wanted to do it for myself.
Hadn’t exercised in years & was previously
completely exercise adverse. But it is so much fun & I laugh every week.
Nobody points and stares we are all too busy doing the best
we can & enjoying it. I look forward to it every week.
Oh and many years ago I went to a *** ***** class and hated it
as it was very fit people
competing with each other. Weds night class is a world away from that xxand this one, that made my eyes a bit watery….“Wow just wow that is what I’m about the total fab combo
Tanya and Claire don’t feel like I’ve been away it’s like going
home thank you girls
x although I’m going to ache tomoz can’t wait x”
If you’ve been to a class before and never went back
I want to apologise on behalf of all the instructors
out there (and they are the majority)
who do give a sh&t about you, and how you feel.
