BRRRRR.
As a sun-worshipping, swim-up bar, salsa on the beach loving, type of holidaymaker left to my own devices, in the wild…
I always used to think I didn’t really like the cold weather.
I would metaphorically put my fingers in my ears and screw my eyes tight shut, until the daffodils came out again – singing: “LALALALALA”.
Weirdly, the reality had a lot more to do with my previous default setting: ‘not very organised’.
Young memories of being caught somewhere without my coat/no lift home organised/wearing highly impractical footwear – was the real culprit.
As the Danish say:
there is no such thing as bad weather… only the wrong clothes
and I have rather come to love the wrapped-up chilliness of Winter.
Getting out in nature for 15 minutes a day will actually improve your happiness levels so much.
We tend to shy from this when it’s cold, but here are 3 reasons that will convince you to get out there and embrace it.
1. It’ll Calm Your Allergies & Inflammation
Many of the niggles we put up with through the Summer months vanish when things are cold and crisp.
There’s virtually no pollen doing its nostril evil out there – the bugs we tend to catch are nice and warm INDOORS.
Also the cold can act as a natural ice pack and many people find their joints feel easier when they spend more time outside in the Winter.
2. You’ll Sleep Better
Longer, darker nights increase your melatonin – helping you sleep more deeply – especially after a brisk walk outside.
You won’t be woken by the sun doing its interrogator impression through the curtains in the morning, – and if you can sleep with the window open that sleep that drop in temperature will be better quality.
3. It Will Help You Burn Excess Fat
All of us have a little brown fat – but mostly white.
Stay with me…
Brown fat is quite different from the type some are trying to lose after the Yuletide Woman vs Lockdown Food onslaught – some scientists describe it as closer to muscle.
Its job is to burn energy, produce heat and increase metabolism (and some other cool stuff).
Getting out in the cold increases brown fat –
and stimulates your metabolism –
helping to get rid of any of the more cuddly white type you don’t want.
So, more than ever, we would love you to wrap up warm and get out there – particularly if there’s snow (because… well FUN!)
And even more than that – could you show us???
