What’s all this then?
Definition
Breathwork is a collection of techniques that involve consciously controlling your breathing to improve your overall well-being. It can range from simple breathing exercises to more structured practices that incorporate movement and music. The benefits include managing stress, increasing relaxation, and improving your mental health.
It’s Not New
As I write this in 2024 – the internet is awash with breathwork, but the practice is deeply rooted in ancient traditions. For thousands of years, cultures worldwide have recognised the power of the breath. In yoga, for instance, ‘pranayama’ involves breath control to harmonise the body and mind. Most meditation practices incorporate some kind of breathing techniques to help people reach deeper states of clarity.
Modern Developments
In recent decades, breathwork has evolved to include more up-to-date, less woo-woo techniques that blend traditional wisdom with science. Methods such as the controversial Holotropic Breathwork (a bit bananas but very popular), use rapid and deep breathing patterns to induce altered states of consciousness for emotional and psychological healing.
Quite trippy.
Contemporary Practices
Today’s breathwork practices integrate ancient techniques with modern twists. For example, some methods combine structured breathing exercises with movement and tribal music to enhance the experience. Others with light therapy, sound baths and even flotation. You can’t move on the internet without bumping into a new style of breathwork retreat, workshop and instructor course. Many people find these modern approaches a powerful way to connect with their ‘inner selves’, reduce stress, and promote overall wellness. It’s just what the 2020s doctor ordered.
I’m working my way through them all…
