That week was Utter Bum.
Statistically,
Last Tuesday was the day of the year that
the most people call in sick.
G.P. Surgeries are at their fullest, but most people
aren’t ILL ill.
You’ve just had enough. Knackered.
Need a day to recover from just carrying on.
And a day didn’t make a dent in it.
Holiday (if even that happens) is way too far away to look forward to.
And you feel fat.
The stuff keeps going round and round your head,
keeps you awake when you are desperate to go to sleep.
Ever done that and seen 2am on your phone?
…then 3:30am,
…then you start falling asleep at bloody 5:20am
Then it’s not even worth going to sleep.
Ever woken up more tired than when you went to bed?
That seriously is paralysing.
Oh, and you blame yourself for that.
Christmas was a bit too long ago,
You’ve just had the January bank statement,
You’re down to 2 pairs of trousers you can fit in.
(which you also blame yourself about)
You’re not Superhuman. You wouldn’t cut your own hair,
I mean you could probably Google it,
but you get help.
Same with fixing your car.
Same with going to the GP.
There are all sorts of websites and online pharmacies
where you can diagnose and treat yourself for most things.
And you know you are probably OK but you go along
just to be sure.
But why would you do that?
You want a second opinion.
Someone who has seen your problem before.Dammit,
sometimes you just want some reassurance and someone to listen.
You get help.
Quite right too.
Whatever journey you are on in life, quitting the fags, starting a new job
getting healthy… it is instinctive to find people to come with you.
We don’t do well in isolation.
Alone is not how we are programmed to be.
3 REASONS YOU NEED HELP
1. You’re Overwhelmed
There’s so much to tackle at once,
and you don’t know where to start
Chances are – you won’t.
Start.
Instead,
You Fire-Fight
Literally running from thing to thing, averting disaster
A last minute ‘quick shop’ – you’ll do a proper one in the week,
only you end up doing 3 more quick-shops…
…that cost more and take more of your time and money than if you had
done it properly.
Or you spend an hour scrabbling around for your MOT certificate
because your Car Tax ran out..
Like you did 6 months ago
But you really ARE going to sort out your paperwork.
This wasted time is EATING up your life.
Sorting out your life clutter sounds like a big task…
but there are smart-hacks to help you do it once and permanently.
Unraveling the overwhelm.
This one task (although it is a biggie, with lots of little sub-tasks)
will make more difference to your life,
than pretty much anything else you could ever do.
Life won’t necessarily be perfect….
but you will have smoothed the way for bumps in the road BEFORE
they trip you up.
2. You’re Stuck
Do I leave my job?
Go part time?
Go back to college?
Ditch that bitchy friend?
Move House
Stand up to the Mother in Law?
Two voices at the same time in your head…
each of them giving a very good arguments Why or Why Not.
Pros and Cons aren’t helping either.
Guilt just clouds the whole fecking thing.
Sod it. I’ll have a glass of wine, bar of Fruit & Nut, fag,
argument.
I’ll sort it out in the morning.
Here’s where help is essential.
An impartial, non-judgmental, listening ear.
Someone who won’t make the decision for you
but knows the right questions to ask you that will help you
arrive at the right one.
And will support you.. whatever happens next.
3. You’re Lost & Scared
Ok, you are ____ years old.
(Damn straight that’s a bigger number than I just filled in)
Who even are you?
When you stop to think, which you rarely do,
you’re not even sure which bits of you are YOU.
Your upbringing, your parents, your school, your Uni,
the culture and values that you share….
Do you actually?
Which bits are YOU, and which bits are a Frankensteiny version
of what’s happened so far in the story of you?
To know where to go next – you know you need to work out
who YOU are.
Where you are.
What you believe.
What makes you PASSIONATE.
When you look at your life… is it just a bit samey.
Comfortable.
Standing Still.
Lazy?
MOVING BACKWARDS??
(And is that necessarily bad?)
You have grown up – and sometimes wonder if you have
made a wrong turn.
Maybe about 3.
Worry that your ROUTINE kind of life is a bit of a cop-out.
Or whether you should be grateful of what you have.
(More Guilt…)
Is it bad you want more?
Were you supposed to BE more?
Is underwhelm worse than the over-kind?
Why do you happily accept help in practically EVERY area of your life
other than our EMOTIONAL self.
You make sure your nails are done.
Roots dyed.
Car serviced.
But you don’t seem to think you deserve help with
Your Happy
Your Fulfilled
Your Calm
How you feel
What’s actually happening to you
every day.
The thing that manages and controls EVERY LAST LITTLE THING.
Try to lose weight without getting your head right first.
YOU. WILL. FAIL.
Then you will beat yourself up about it.
Exercise without tackling your lack of ACTUAL motivation.
I promise you – don’t even bother.
YOU. WILL. FAIL.
A person arriving for their first Personal Training session.
Brief chat.
I will tell them there and then.
Don’t bother.
You’re head’s not in this, and we are both
going to p$^s each other off.
Unless we are going to do some SERIOUS WORK.
(Haven’t lost one yet… #justsayin’)
This stuff you reckon you can manage by yourself….
As Dr. Phil says….”How’s THAT working out fo’ ya?”
If you need someone to take that journey with you
i.e. if you want to succeed.
GET. THE. HELP.
A friend.
A professional.
A support group.
People. Your Mentors. Your coaches.
People to hold you accountable.
People who won’t BS you.
People who will call you out on your excuses.
And lies.
And know the difference.
The ones with the know how to break things down into manageable
chunks.
The ones who speak your language.
Getting help is a sign of strength and a public acknowledgement
that you mean business.
Richard Branson has 5 mentors.
Who each have their own mentors.
All successful people do.
They know they need people to get further than they would have
on their own.
And they are not scared to ask..
If you take a moment to think,
you’ll know who the right people are.
The ones that don’t have an axe to grind, the ones who say the
things that show you they KNOW where you are at.
Ask them.
Ask them tomorrow.
And if it’s us.
We have a project starting in March.
It’s small.
We are going to work with a small number of women.
To change every area of their lives.
It’s small because we are going to focus so intensely
on them, we won’t LET them fail.
And then we are going to show the World what they achieved.
