Action 3: Heckin’ Highlights
Grab your favourite highlighter (orange if you’re feeling adventurous) and your trusty angry black marker pen – they’re about to get a workout.
Today’s task: – Highlight the MUST DOs:
- Start with the list you’ve been building in your Locus of Control diagram.
- Highlight the tasks that absolutely must be done.
- These are the non-negotiables, the tasks that, if left undone, could lead to more work, stress, or consequences later.
Criteria for MUST DO – ask yourself:
- If they aren’t done, will it create more work later?
- Will someone’s health or happiness (including yours) be at risk?
- Is your safety or security on the line?
- Could you suffer financially?
- Is there a legal obligation (and potential consequences for ignoring it)?
- Will it impact your future in a way that you’ll regret?
Question the MUSTs:
Pause for a moment. For each highlighted task, consider:
- What will doing this bring you?
- What’s the outcome or benefit?
- Is it worth the effort?
- If it’s a MUST, but you’re unsure how to manage it, just put a question mark next to it. We’ll figure out the ‘how’ later.
NOPE List:
- Next, take your marker pen of NOPE.
- Look at the tasks that didn’t make the MUST DO list.
- If you realise that you don’t absolutely need to do them, cross them out.
- Be ruthless. If it doesn’t meet the criteria, it’s out.
Recap:
- Highlight the absolute MUST DO tasks in your inner circle.
- Put a question mark by any MUSTs you’re uncertain about.
- Use your marker to eliminate non-essential tasks.
Remember, these exercises are about clearing mental space so that by the time we reach the final step, you’re only focused on what truly matters.
