While it’s a great idea to accept invitations when they arise, how about taking the bull by the horns and organising something instead?
A Pot Luck Party
People love contributing to a party “what shall I bring?” “Oh, nothing, just yourself” is what we usually answer.
But if you say “surprise me – everyone’s bringing something” means they can bring their own favourite thing.
Who cares if you get 5 puddings – it will add to the fun – and actually that rarely happens.
It means you can relax, think about things like music and games (or even outsource those), and be free to enjoy and talk about the things people made.
A Cocktail Casino/Games Party
Invite people to dress up a bit – and get fancy for an evening of fun.
Again, let people bring their own spirits and recipes – even non-alcoholic if that’s your persuasion.
A canape buffet means you can stay out of the kitchen and be where the fun is
Poker usually takes too long, Blackjack is a casino favourite if you know it but you can get Googling some card games you think your guests would like.
And honestly – even card games like snap can be super fun, ‘Who am I’ (Rizzla on the head, only Yes or No answers), Pictionary or Articulate can be brilliant, high energy, round the table fun.
Fancy Dress Party
Crank up the tunes, borrow some disco lights and have everyone come in disguise.
It’s already fun before they’ve got there. You can have a theme, or let people choose their own favourite for people to guess. I don’t think one is more fun than the other.
Best one I ever did was a ‘cross-dressing party’. Not entirely certain how that fits with 2022 sensibilities, but it was RAUCOUS.
There’s something about a hairy dude with a beard in a full evening gown.
That might be just me…
A neighbours get-together
Most of us have neighbours we don’t know.
Use a get-together as an opportunity to put things right.
I know that takes a certain degree of kahunas, but honestly – it’s worth taking a breath and putting out the invitations.
Give them stickers to write their name and door number – and spend some time getting to know each other.
You could even add an icebreaker with speed ‘neighbour-friend-dating’, to find out as much about each other as you can in 2 minutes before moving on.
Let us know what plans you make.
